Chapter One<\/p>\n
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
\n1:2 This one was with God in the beginning.
\n1:3 All things came into existence through him and without him, nothing came into existence that has existed.
\n1:4 In him was life and the life was the light of all men.
\n1:5 And the light [continually] shines in darkness but the same darkness does not overcome it.
\n1:6 A man came, sent from God, whose name was John.
\n1:7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.
\n1:8 He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
\n1:9 The true light, who gives light to every man was coming into the world.
\n1:10 He was in the world and the world came into existence through him, and the world did not recognize him.
\n1:11 He came to what was his own but those who were his own did not receive him.
\n1:12 But as many as did receive him, he gave them the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in his name,
\n1:13 who were born not from blood [human parents], nor from the will of flesh [sexual desire], nor from the will of a man [husband], but from God.
\n1:14 Now the Word became flesh and dwelt among us
\nand we saw his glory\u2014glory as the one and only [who came] from the Father, full of grace and truth.
\n1:15 John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying,
\n\u201cThis one was the one about whom I said, \u2018He who comes after me has a higher rank because he existed before me.\u2019\u201d
\n1:16 For from his fullness, we have received grace upon grace.
\n1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
\n1:18 No one has ever seen God. The one and only God the Son who is in the bosom [closest fellowship] of the Father, he [the Son] has made known.
\n1:19 Now this is the testimony of John that Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, \u201cWho are you?\u201d
\n1:20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, \u201cI am not the Christ.\u201d
\n1:21 So they asked him, \u201cThen who are you? Are you Elijah?\u201d He said, \u201cI am not!\u201d \u201cAre you the Prophet?\u201d And he answered, \u201cNo.\u201d
\n1:22 Then they said to him, \u201cWho are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?\u201d
\n1:23 He said, \u201cI am a voice of one shouting in the wilderness, \u2018Make straight the way for the Lord, as Isaiah the prophet said.\u201d
\n1:24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
\n1:25 They asked him, and said to him, \u201cWhy then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?\u201d
\n1:26 John answered them saying, \u201cI baptize with water, but among you stands One whom you do not know,
\n1:27 who is coming after me of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal.
\n1:28 These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
\n1:29 On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, \u201cBehold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
\n1:30 This is the one about whom I said, \u201cAfter me comes a man who has a higher rank than me because he existed before me.
\n1:31 I did not recognize him, but so that he might be
\nrevealed to Israel, I came baptizing in water.\u201d
\n1:32 Then John testified, \u201cI saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
\n1:33 And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, \u201cUpon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining\u2014this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
\n1:34 I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.\u201d
\n1:35 Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples,
\n1:36 and looking at Jesus as he walked by he said, \u201cBehold, the Lamb of God!\u201d
\n1:37 When the two disciples heard him speak, they followed Jesus.
\n1:38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, \u201cWhat are you seeking?\u201d And they said to him,
\n\u201cRabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying?\u201d
\n1:39 He said to them, \u201cCome, and you will see.\u201d So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour (4 p.m.).
\n1:40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed him [Jesus].
\n1:41 He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, \u201cWe have found the Messiah\u201d (which translated means Christ).
\n1:42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, \u201cYou are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas (which is translated Peter).
\n1:43 On the next day, he [Jesus] wanted to set out to Galilee and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, \u201cFollow Me.\u201d
\n1:44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
\n1:45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, \u201cWe have found whom Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets\u2014Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.\u201d
\n1:46 Nathanael said to him, \u201cCan any good thing come out of Nazareth?\u201d Philip said to him, \u201cCome and see.\u201d
\n1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him,
\n\u201cBehold, truly an Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!\u201d
\n1:48 Nathanael said to Him, \u201cHow do You know me?\u201d Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cBefore Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.\u201d
\n1:49 Nathanael answered Him, \u201cRabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.\u201d
\n1:50 Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cBecause I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.\u201d
\n1:51 And He said to him, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chapter Two<\/p>\n
2:1 Now on the third day there was a wedding at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there,
\n2:2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
\n2:3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, \u201cThey have no wine.\u201d
\n2:4 Jesus said to her, \u201cWhat is that to me and you, woman? My hour has not yet come.\u201d
\n2:5 His mother said to the servants, \u201cWhatever He says to you, do it.\u201d
\n2:6 Now there were six stone water-pots set there for the purification custom of the Jews, holding twenty or thirty gallons each.
\n2:7 Jesus said to them, \u201cFill the water-pots with water.\u201d So they filled them up to the brim.
\n2:8 And He said to them, \u201cNow draw some out and take it to the headwaiter.\u201d So they took it to him,
\n2:9 and when the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,
\n2:10 \u201cEveryone serves the good wine first, and when they are drunk, the cheaper [poorer] wine is served. You have kept the good wine until now.
\n2:11 Jesus did this as the first of his signs in Cana of Galilee and revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him.
\n2:12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
\n2:13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
\n2:14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
\n2:15 And he made a whip of cords and drove all of them
\nfrom the temple both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and turned over their tables.
\n2:16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, \u201cTake these things away! Do not make my Father\u2019s house a place of business [marketplace].
\n2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written,\u201cZeal for your house will consume me.\u201d
\n2:18 Then the Jews [Jewish authorities] responded and said to him, \u201cWhat sign do You show us [as your authority] for doing these things?\u201d
\n2:19 Jesus answered and said to them, \u201cDestroy this temple and in three days, I will raise it up.\u201d
\n2:20 Then the Jews [Jewish authorities] said, \u201cThis temple was constructed in forty-six years and you will raise it up in three days.\u201d
\n2:21 But that he spoke of was the temple of his body.
\n2:22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
\n2:23 Now while He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, while observing the signs which he was doing.
\n2:24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all men,
\n2:25 and he did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for he himself knew what was in man.<\/p>\n
Chapter Three<\/p>\n
3:1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
\n3:2 This man came to him [Jesus] at night and said to him, \u201cRabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one is able to do these signs that You do unless God is with him.\u201d
\n3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above he cannot see the kingdom of God.\u201d
\n3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, \u201cHow can a man be born when he is old? He is not able to enter into the womb of his mother a second time and be born, can he?\u201d
\n3:5 Jesus answered, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
\n3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
\n3:7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You all must be born from above.\u2019
\n3:8 The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.\u201d
\n3:9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, \u201cHow can these things be?\u201d
\n3:10 Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cYou are a teacher of Israel and you do not know these things ?
\n3:11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony.
\n3:12 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
\n3:13 No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.
\n3:14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
\n3:15 so that whoever believes may have in Him eternal life.\u201d
\n3:16 For in this way, God loved the world so that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
\n3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
\n3:18 The one who believes in him is not condemned; but the one who does not believe has already been condemned because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
\n3:19 Now this is the reason for judgment: that the light has come into the world and mankind has loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil.
\n3:20 For everyone who does worthless deeds hate the light and does not come to the light so that their deeds will not be exposed.
\n3:21 But he who practices the truth comes to the light, in order that his deeds might be manifested as done in God.
\n3:22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, and there he spent time with them and was baptizing.
\n3:23 John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there and they [people] were coming and were being baptized.
\n3:24 For John had not yet been thrown into prison.
\n3:25 Now a dispute arose between some of John\u2019s disciples
\nwith a Jew about purification.
\n3:26 And they came to John and said to him, \u201cRabbi, He who was with you across the Jordan [river], that is the one about whom you have testified\u2014behold, he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.\u201d
\n3:27 John answered and said, \u201cA man is not able to receive anything unless it has been given him from heaven.\u201d
\n3:28 You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, \u2018I am not the Christ,\u2019 but, \u2018I have been sent before Him.\u2019
\n3:29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the sound of the voice of the bridegroom.
\nTherefore, this joy of mine has been fulfilled.
\n3:30 He must increase [become more important], but I must decrease [become less important].\u201d
\n3:31 The one who comes from above is superior to all; the one who is from earth [belongs to] the earth and he speaks from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is superior to all.
\n3:32 He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.
\n3:33 He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true.
\n3:34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit with measure [unlimited].
\n3:35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.
\n3:36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.<\/p>\n
Chapter Four<\/p>\n
4:1 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
\n4:2 (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),
\n4:3 he left Judea and went away again into Galilee.
\n4:4 And he had to pass through Samaria.
\n4:5 So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph;
\n4:6 and Jacob\u2019s well was there. So Jesus having grown tired from his journey was thus sitting on the well. It was about the sixth hour (noon).
\n4:7 A woman came from Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, \u201cGive me some water to drink.\u201d
\n4:8 For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
\n4:9 So the Samaritan woman said to him, \u201cHow can you, being a Jew ask me, being a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?\u201d (For the Jews had nothing in common with
\nSamaritans).
\n4:10 Jesus answered and said to her, \u201cIf you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, \u2018Give me some water to drink,\u2019 you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.\u201d
\n4:11 [The woman] said to him, \u201cSir, you have no bucket and the well is deep; where therefore, do you get this living water?
\n4:12 \u201cYou are not greater than our father Jacob, are you, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?\u201d
\n4:13 Jesus answered and said to her, \u201cEveryone who drinks from this water will thirst again;
\n4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him
\nshall not be thirsty again [forever] but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.\u201d
\n4:15 The woman said to Him, \u201cSir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.\u201d
\n4:16 He said to her, \u201cGo, call your husband and come here.\u201d
\n4:17 The woman answered and said to him, \u201cI have no husband.\u201d Jesus said to her, \u201cRightly you have said, \u2018I have no husband\u2019;
\n4:18 for you have had five husbands and now the one you have is not your husband; this you have said truly [accurately].\u201d
\n4:19 The woman said to Him, \u201cSir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
\n4:20 \u201cOur fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you all
\nsay that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.\u201d
\n4:21 Jesus said to her, \u201cBelieve me, woman, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
\n4:22 \u201cYou all worship what you all do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
\n4:23 \u201cBut an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;
\nfor the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.
\n4:24 \u201cGod is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.\u201d
\n4:25 The woman said to him, \u201cI know that Messiah is coming\u201d (who is called Christ); whenever he comes, he will tell us everything.\u201d
\n4:26 Jesus said to her, \u201cI am, who speaks to you.\u201d
\n4:27 Now at this time his disciples came and were amazed that he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, \u201cWhat do you seek?\u201d or \u201cWhy are you speaking with her?\u201d
\n4:28 So the woman left her water pot, and went into the city and said to the men,
\n4:29 \u201cCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did. This is not the Christ, is it?\u201d
\n4:30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
\n4:31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, \u201cRabbi, eat something.\u201d
\n4:32 But He said to them, \u201cI have food to eat that you do not know about.\u201d
\n4:33 So the disciples were saying to one another, \u201cNo one brought Him anything to eat, did he?\u201d
\n4:34 Jesus said to them, \u201cMy food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.
\n4:35 \u201cDo you not say, \u2018There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest\u2019? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
\n4:36 \u201cEven now, he who reaps is receiving reward and is gathering fruit for life eternal, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together.
\n4:37 \u201cFor in this the saying is true that one sows and another reaps.
\n4:38 \u201cI sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.\u201d
\n4:39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, \u201cHe told me all that I have done.\u201d
\n4:40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking him to stay with them, and he remained there two days,
\n4:41 and many more believed on account of his word.
\n4:42 They were saying to the woman, \u201cIt is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and we know that this One is truly the Savior of the world.\u201d
\n4:43 After the two days he departed from there to Galilee.
\n4:44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
\n4:45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the feast (for they themselves had gone to the feast).
\n4:46 Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum.
\n4:47 When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son; for he was about to die.
\n4:48 So Jesus said to him, \u201cUnless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!\u201d
\n4:49 The official said to Him, \u201cSir, come down before my child dies.\u201d
\n4:50 Jesus said to him, \u201cGo home; your son lives.\u201d The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and departed.
\n4:51 While he was on his way down, his servants met him saying that his son was going to live.
\n4:52 So he asked them the hour in which he got better. Then they said to him, \u201cYesterday, at the seventh hour the fever left him.\u201d
\n4:53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, \u201cYour son lives\u201d; and he himself believed and his entire household.
\n4:54 This is again a second sign that Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.<\/p>\n
Chapter Five<\/p>\n
5:1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
\n5:2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool called Bethzatha in Aramaic, having five porticoes.
\n5:3 In these porticoes, lay many who were sick, blind, lame and paralyzed.
\n[5:4 Not in the original manuscripts]
\n5:5 Now a man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
\n5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and learned that he had already been a long time in this condition, He said to him, \u201cDo you want to get well?\u201d
\n5:7 The sick man answered him, \u201cSir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming to get into the water, another person goes down there before me.\u201d
\n5:8 Then Jesus said to him, \u201cGet up! Pick up your mat and walk.\u201d
\n5:9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his mat and started walking.
\nNow it was the Sabbath on that day.
\n5:10 So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, \u201cIt is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.\u201d
\n5:11 But he answered them, \u201cHe who made me well was the one who said to me, \u2018Pick up your mat and walk.\u2019\u201d
\n5:12 They asked him, \u201cWho is the man who said to you, \u2018Pick up your mat and walk\u2019?\u201d
\n5:13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped out while there was a crowd in that place.
\n5:14 After this Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, \u201cBehold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.\u201d
\n5:15 The man went away, and told the Jews [authorities] that it was Jesus who had made him well.
\n5:16 So, for this reason the Jews [authorities] were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
\n5:17 And He answered them, \u201cMy Father is working until now, and I myself am working.\u201d
\n5:18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath, but because he also called God his own Father,
\nmaking Himself equal with God.
\n5:19 Therefore Jesus answered and said to them, \u201c Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing from himself
\nunless, it is something he sees the Father doing; for whatever that one [the Father] does, the Son does likewise.
\n5:20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.
\n5:21 For just as the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, even so the Son also makes them alive, those he wishes.
\n5:22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but he has given all judgment to the Son,
\n5:23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
\n5:24 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word, and believes the one who sent me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
\n5:25 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
\n5:26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has given to the Son life to have in himself;
\n5:27 and he [Father] gave authority to him [Son] to execute judgment because he is the Son of Man.
\n5:28 \u201cDo not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
\n5:29 and come out\u2014those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who practice evil to a resurrection of judgement.
\n5:30 \u201cI can do nothing from myself. Just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous because I do not seek my will but the will of him who sent me.
\n5:31 \u201cIf I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.
\n5:32 There is another who testifies about me, and I know the testimony he testifies about me is true.
\n5:33 You have sent [an envoy] to John, and he has testified to the truth.
\n5:34 (I do not accept human testimony, but I say this so that you may be saved.)
\n5:35 He was a lamp that was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice for a time in his light.
\n5:36 \u201cBut I have a testimony greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to complete\u2014these very works that I am doing\u2014testify about me that the Father has sent me.
\n5:37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified about me. You people have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
\n5:38 neither do you have his word residing in you, because you do not believe the one whom he sent.
\n5:39 You study the scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life, it is these same scriptures that testify about Me;
\n5:40 and you are unwilling to come to me so that you may have life.
\n5:41 \u201cI do not receive glory from men;
\n5:42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.
\n5:43 \u201cI have come in my Father\u2019s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
\n5:44 \u201cHow can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?
\n5:45 \u201cDo not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.
\n5:46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me.
\n5:47 \u201cBut if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?\u201d<\/p>\n
Chapter Six<\/p>\n
6:1 After these things, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias)
\n6:2 A large crowd was following him, because they were seeing the signs-miracles which he was performing on those who were sick.
\n6:3 Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with His disciples.
\n6:4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
\n6:5 Then when Jesus lifted up his eyes [looked up] and saw that there was a large crowd coming to him, said to Philip, \u201cWhere are we to buy bread so these people may eat?\u201d
\n6:6 This he said to test him, for he knew what he was about to do.
\n6:7 Philip answered Him, \u201cTwo hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each one to receive a little.\u201d
\n6:8 One from his disciples, Andrew, brother of Simon Peter said to him,
\n6:9 \u201cThere is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?\u201d
\n6:10 Jesus said, \u201cHave the people sit down.\u201d (Now there was a lot of grass in that place.) So the men sat down, the number about five thousand.
\n6:11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.
\n6:12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples, \u201cGather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be wasted.\u201d
\n6:13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
\n6:14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, \u201cThis is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.\u201d
\n6:15 Then Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself alone [to pray].
\n6:16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
\n6:17 and got into a boat and started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark and Jesus had not yet come to them.
\n6:18 The sea began to get rough because a strong wind was blowing.
\n6:19 Then, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia [three or four miles], they saw Jesus walking upon the sea and coming near the boat, they were frightened.
\n6:20 But he said to them, \u201cI AM. Do not be afraid.\u201d
\n6:21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
\n6:22 The next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat that had been there, except one [which was missing], and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
\n6:23 Other small boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
\n6:24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
\n6:25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, \u201cRabbi, when did You get here?\u201d
\n6:26 Jesus answered them and said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
\n6:27 \u201cDo not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on this one [Jesus] the Father, God, has set His seal [of approval].\u201d
\n6:28 Therefore they said to Him, \u201cWhat shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?\u201d
\n6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, \u201cThis is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.\u201d
\n6:30 So they said to him, \u201cThen what sign-miracle will you do so that we may see and believe you? What will you do?
\n6:31 \u201cOur fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; just as it is written, \u2018He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
\n6:32 Then Jesus said to them, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, It is not Moses who gave you bread from heaven but my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.\u201d
\n6:33 \u201cFor the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.\u201d
\n6:34 Then they said to Him, \u201cLord [Sir], always give us this bread.\u201d
\n6:35 Jesus said to them, \u201cI am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
\n6:36 \u201cBut I said to you that you have seen [me], and still do not believe.
\n6:37 \u201cAll whom the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not drive away.
\n6:38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
\n6:39 Now this is the will of the one who sent me\u2014that out of all he has given to me, I will lose none but raise it [them] up on the last day.
\n6:40 \u201cFor this is the will of my Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.\u201d
\n6:41 Therefore the Jews were grumbling about him, because he said, \u201cI am the bread that came down out of heaven.
\n6:42 They were saying, \u201cIs not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, \u2018I have come down out of heaven\u2019?\u201d
\n6:43 Jesus answered and said to them, \u201cDo not grumble among yourselves.
\n6:44 \u201cNo one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
\n6:45 It is written in the Prophets: \u2018They will all be taught by God.\u2019 Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
\n6:46 \u201cNot that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; this one has seen the Father.
\n6:47 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.
\n6:48 \u201cI Am the bread of life.
\n6:49 \u201cYour fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
\n6:50 \u201cThis is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
\n6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.\u201d
\n6:52 Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, \u201cHow can this man give us his flesh to eat?\u201d
\n6:53 Jesus said to them, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves.
\n6:54 \u201cHe who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
\n6:55 \u201cFor my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
\n6:56 \u201cHe who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
\n6:57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me, he also will live because of me.
\n6:58 This is the bread that came down from heaven; not as
\nthe fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.\u201d
\n6:59 These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
\n6:60 Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, \u201cThis is a difficult statement; who can listen [understand] to it?\u201d
\n6:61 But Jesus, knowing in himself [conscious of the fact] that his disciples grumbled at this, said to them, \u201cDoes this cause you to stumble?
\n6:62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?
\n6:63 \u201cIt is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
\n6:64 But there are some of you who do not believe.\u201d (For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray him.)
\n6:65 And He was saying, \u201cFor this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to me unless it has been granted him from the Father.\u201d
\n6:66 From this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer were walking with him.
\n6:67 So Jesus said to the twelve, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to go away too, do you?\u201d
\n6:68 Simon Peter answered Him, \u201cLord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
\n6:69 \u201cWe have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.\u201d
\n6:70 Jesus answered them, \u201cDid I not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?\u201d
\n6:71 Now he said this about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him.<\/p>\n
Chapter Seven<\/p>\n
7:1 After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
\n7:2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
\n7:3 Therefore his brothers said to Him, \u201cLeave here and go into Judea, so that your disciples also may see your works which you are doing.
\n7:4 \u201cFor no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.\u201d
\n7:5 For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
\n7:6 So Jesus said to them, \u201cMy time is not yet here, but your time is always ready.
\n7:7 \u201cThe world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it, that its deeds are evil.
\n7:8 \u201cYou go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because my time has not yet fully come.\u201d
\n7:9 Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.
\n7:10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.
\n7:11 So the Jews were seeking him at the feast and were saying, \u201cWhere is that one?\u201d
\n7:12 There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning him; some were saying, \u201cHe is a good man\u201d; others were saying, \u201cNo, on the contrary, he leads the people astray.\u201d
\n7:13 Yet no one was speaking openly of him for fear of the Jews.
\n7:14 Now about the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple and began to teach.
\n7:15 Then the Jewish authorities were astonished saying,
\n\u201cHow did this man become so learned having never had an education?\u201d
\n7:16 So Jesus answered them and said, \u201cMy teaching is not mine but of the one who sent me.\u201d
\n7:17 \u201cIf anyone is willing to do his [God\u2019s] will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from myself.
\n7:18 \u201cHe who speaks from himself [on his own] seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
\n7:19 \u201cDid not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you keeps the Law? Why do you seek to kill me?\u201d
\n7:20 The crowd answered, \u201cYou have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?\u201d
\n7:21 Jesus answered them, \u201cI did one deed, and you all are amazed.
\n7:22 \u201cFor this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.
\n7:23 \u201cIf a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, are you angry with me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?
\n7:24 \u201cDo not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.\u201d
\n7:25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, \u201cIs this not the man whom they are seeking to kill?
\n7:26 \u201cLook, he is speaking openly, and they are saying nothing to him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?
\n7:27 But we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where he is from.\u201d
\n7:28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, while teaching and speaking, \u201cYou both know me and know where I am from; and I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you do not know.
\n7:29 \u201cI know him, because I am from him, and that one sent me.\u201d
\n7:30 So then they were seeking to seize him; and no man laid his hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
\n7:31 But many of the crowd believed in him; and they were saying, \u201cWhen the Christ comes, he will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will he?\u201d
\n7:32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Him.
\n7:33 Therefore Jesus said, \u201cFor a little while longer I am with you, then I go to him who sent Me.
\n7:34 \u201cYou will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.\u201d
\n7:35 The Jews then said to one another, \u201cWhere does this man intend to go that we will not find him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is he?
\n7:36 \u201cWhat is this statement that He said, \u2018You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come\u2019?\u201d
\n7:37 On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, \u201cIf anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
\n7:38 \u201cHe who believes in me just as the Scriptures said,
\nrivers of living water will flow from his innermost being.\u201d
\n7:39 Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who
\nbelieved in him were about to receive. For the Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified.
\n7:40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, \u201cThis really is the Prophet.\u201d
\n7:41 Others were saying, \u201cThis is the Christ.\u201d Still others were saying, \u201cSurely the Christ is not coming from Galilee, is he?
\n7:42 Does not the scripture say that Christ comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem the village where David lived?
\n7:43 So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus.
\n7:44 Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
\n7:45 Therefore, the officers [temple guards] returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, \u201cWhy did you not bring him?\u201d
\n7:46 The officers [temple guards] answered, \u201cNever has a man spoke like this man speaks.\u201d
\n7:47 Then the Pharisees answered them, \u201c You have not also been deceived, have you?\u201d
\n7:48 \u201cNot one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?
\n7:49 \u201cBut this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.\u201d
\n7:50 Nicodemus who had came to him [Jesus] before, being one of them, said to them,
\n7:51 \u201cOur Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?\u201d
\n7:52 They answered him, \u201cYou are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chapter Eight<\/p>\n
8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, \u201cI Am the light of the world; he who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.\u201d
\n8:13 So the Pharisees said to him, \u201cYou are testifying about yourself; Your testimony is not true.\u201d
\n8:14 Jesus answered and said to them, \u201cEven if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
\n8:15 \u201cYou judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone.
\n8:16 \u201cBut if I do judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent me.
\n8:17 \u201cEven in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true.
\n8:18 \u201cI am he who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.\u201d
\n8:19 Then they asked him, \u201cWhere is your father?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cYou know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also.\u201d
\n8:20 These words he spoke while near the treasury [offering box], while teaching in the temple; no one seized him because his hour had not yet come.
\n8:21Then he said again to them, \u201cI am going away, and you will seek me, and will die in your sin; where I am going you are not able to come.\u201d
\n8:22 So the Jews were saying, \u201cSurely he will not kill himself, will he, since he says, \u2018Where I am going, you cannot come\u2019?\u201d
\n8:23 And He was saying to them, \u201cYou are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.
\n8:24 \u201cTherefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I Am, you will die in your sins.\u201d
\n8:25 So they were saying to Him, \u201cWho are you?\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cWhat have I been saying to you from the beginning?
\n8:26 \u201cI have many things to speak and to judge about you,
\nbut he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him [the Father], these I speak to the world.\u201d
\n8:27 They did not understand that he was speaking to them about his Father.
\n8:28 Then Jesus said, \u201cWhen you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I Am. And I do nothing from myself, I speak these things just as the Father taught me.
\n8:29 And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.\u201d
\n8:30 While he was saying these things, many people believed in him.
\n8:31 Then Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, \u201cIf you continue in my word, you are truly disciples of mine;
\n8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.\u201d
\n8:33 They answered Him, \u201cWe are Abraham\u2019s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that you say, \u2018You will become free\u2019?\u201d
\n8:34 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you,
\neveryone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
\n8:35 \u201cThe slave does not remain in the household forever; the son does remain forever.
\n8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
\n8:37 \u201cI know that you are Abraham\u2019s descendants; But you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you.
\n8:38 I am telling you the things I have seen while with the Father; and you practice the things you have heard from your father.
\n8:39 They answered and said to Him, \u201cAbraham is our father.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cIf you are Abraham\u2019s children, do the deeds of Abraham.
\n8:40 \u201cBut now, you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this [i.e. kill me] Abraham did not do.
\n8:41 \u201cYou are doing the deeds of your father.\u201d They said to him, \u201cWe were not born of fornication; we have one Father, God.\u201d
\n8:42 Jesus said to them, \u201cIf God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come from God and am now here. For I have not come on my own initiative but he sent me.
\n8:43 \u201cWhy do you not understand what I am saying? It is because your are not able to hear [accept] my word.
\n8:44 \u201cYou are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand [uphold] in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
\n8:45 \u201cBut because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
\n8:46 \u201cWhich one of you convicts me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe me?
\n8:47 \u201cHe who is of [belongs to] God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.\u201d
\n8:48 The Jews answered and said to him, \u201cDo we not say rightly that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?\u201d
\n8:49 Jesus answered, \u201cI do not have a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
\n8:50 \u201cBut I do not seek my glory; there is One who seeks it and judges.
\n8:51 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word he will never see death.\u201d
\n8:52 The Jews said to Him, \u201cNow we know that you have a demon. Both Abraham and the prophets died, yet you say
\n\u2018If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.\u2019
\n8:53 You are not greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? The prophets died too; whom do you make yourself out to be?\u201d
\n8:54 Jesus answered, \u201cIf I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, \u2018he is our God\u2019;
\n8:55 and you do not know him, but I know him; and if I say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word.
\n8:56 \u201cYour father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.\u201d
\n8:57 So the Jews said to Him, \u201cYou are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?\u201d
\n8:58 Jesus said to them, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham existed, I Am.\u201d
\n8:59 Then they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.<\/p>\n
Chapter Nine<\/p>\n
9:1 As He passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.
\n9:2 And his disciples asked him, \u201cRabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?\u201d
\n9:3 Jesus answered, \u201cNeither this man nor his parents sinned,\u201d but it was so that the works of God might be manifested in him.
\n9:4 \u201cWe must work the works of him who sent me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
\n9:5 \u201cWhile I am in the world, I am the light of the world.\u201d
\n9:6 Having said this, he spat on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put the mud on the man\u2019s eyes,
\n9:7 and said to him, \u201cGo and wash in the pool of Siloam\u201d
\n(which is translated \u201csent\u201d). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
\n9:8 Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously as a beggar began saying, \u201cIs not this the one who used to sit and beg?\u201d
\n9:9 Some were saying, \u201cThis is he,\u201d Others were saying, \u201cNo, but he is like him.\u201d He kept saying, \u201cI am the one.\u201d
\n9:10 So they were saying to him, \u201cHow then were your eyes opened?\u201d
\n9:11 He answered, \u201cThe man who is called Jesus made mud, and put on my eyes, and said to me, \u2018Go to Siloam and wash\u2019; so having went away and washed, I received sight.\u201d
\n9:12 They said to him, \u201cWhere is He?\u201d He said, \u201cI do not know.\u201d
\n9:13 They brought to the Pharisees the man previously blind.
\n9:14 Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
\n9:15 Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, \u201cHe put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see.\u201d
\n9:16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, \u201cThis man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.\u201d But others were saying, \u201cHow can a man who is a sinner do such signs?\u201d So there was division among them.
\n9:17 So again, they said to the blind man, \u201cWhat do you say about him, since He opened your eyes?\u201d And he said, \u201cHe is a prophet.\u201d
\n9:18 The Jews then did not believe the things about him,
\nthat he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,
\n9:19 and questioned them, saying, \u201cIs this your son, who you say that was born blind? Then how does he now see?\u201d
\n9:20 His parents answered them and said, \u201cWe know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
\n9:21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.\u201d
\n9:22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him [Jesus] to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
\n9:23 For this reason his parents said, \u201cHe is of age; ask him.\u201d
\n9:24 So they called the man who had been blind a second time and said to him, \u201cGive glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.\u201d
\n9:25 Then he answered, \u201cI do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, I was blind and now I see.\u201d
\n9:26 Then they said to him, \u201cWhat did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?\u201d
\n9:27 He answered them, \u201cI told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become his disciples too, do you?\u201d
\n9:28 They insulted him and said, \u201cYou are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
\n9:29 \u201cWe know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he is from.\u201d
\n9:30 The man answered and said to them, \u201cNow this is a remarkable thing, that you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.
\n9:31 \u201cWe know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.
\n9:32 \u201cSince the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
\n9:33 \u201cIf this man were not from God, He could do nothing.\u201d
\n9:34 They answered him, \u201cYou were born entirely in your sins, and are you teaching us?\u201d So they threw him out.
\n9:35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and found him, he said, \u201cDo you believe in the Son of Man?\u201d
\n9:36 He answered and said, \u201cWho is he, Lord, that I may believe in Him?\u201d
\n9:37 Jesus said to him, \u201cYou have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.\u201d
\n9:38 [Then he said, \u201cLord, I believe,\u201d and he worshiped him.
\n9:39 And Jesus said,] For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.\u201d
\n9:40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to Him, \u201cWe are not blind too, are we?\u201d
\n9:41 Jesus said to them, \u201cIf you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, \u2018We see,\u2019 your sin remains.<\/p>\n
Chapter Ten<\/p>\n
10:1 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the gate into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.
\n10:2 But he who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
\n10:3 \u201cTo him the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
\n10:4 \u201cWhen he has brought all his own sheep, he goes ahead of them and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
\n10:5 \u201cThey will never follow a stranger but will flee from him because they do not know the stranger\u2019s voice.\u201d
\n10:6 Jesus spoke this figurative speech to them but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
\n10:7 So Jesus said to them again, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, I am the gate of the sheep.
\n10:8 \u201cAll who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
\n10:9 \u201cI am the gate; if anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
\n10:10 \u201cThe thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
\nI came that they may have life, and have it extraordinarily.
\n10:11 \u201cI am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
\n10:12 \u201cHe who is a hired hand, and who is not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches and scatters them.
\n10:13 \u201cHe flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep.
\n10:14 \u201cI am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,
\n10:15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father and I lay down my life for the sheep.
\n10:16 \u201cI have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice; and they will be one flock and one shepherd.
\n10:17 \u201cFor this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it back again.
\n10:18 \u201cNo one takes it away from me, but I lay it down
\nfrom my own free will. I have the authority to lay it down,
\nand I have the authority to take it back again. This commandment I received from my Father.\u201d
\n10:19 A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words.
\n10:20 Many of them were saying, \u201cHe has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to him?
\n10:21 Others were saying, \u201cThese are not the sayings of one demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?\u201d
\n10:22 Then the Feast of Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter
\n10:23 and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon.
\n10:24 The Jews then gathered around him, and were saying to him, \u201cHow long will you keep us in suspense?
\nIf you are the Christ, tell us plainly.\u201d
\n10:25 Jesus answered them, \u201cI told you, and you do not believe; the works which I do in my Father\u2019s name, these testify of me.
\n10:26 \u201cBut you do not believe because you are not of my sheep.
\n10:27 \u201cMy sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me;
\n10:28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
\n10:29 \u201cMy Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father\u2019s hand.
\n10:30 \u201c I and the Father are one.\u201d
\n10:31 Again, the Jews picked up stones in order to stone him.
\n10:32 Jesus said to them, \u201cI have shown you many good works from the Father. For which one of them are you going to stone me?\u201d
\n10:33 The Jews answered him, \u201cWe do not stone you for a good work but for blasphemy and that you, a man, make yourself out to be God.
\n10:34 Jesus answered them, \u201c Is it not written in your law,
\n\u201cI said, you are gods\u201d?
\n10:35 If he called them \u2018gods,\u2019 to whom the word of God came\u2014and the Scripture cannot be broken\u2014
\n10:36 do you say of him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, \u2018You are blaspheming,\u2019 because I said, \u2018I am the Son of God.\u2019?
\n10:37 \u201cIf I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me,
\n10:38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me,
\n[my words] believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.\u201d
\n10:39 Then they attempted again to seize him, but he escaped from their hands
\n10:40 And he went away again beyond the Jordan river to the place where John the Baptist was first baptizing, and he was staying there.
\n10:41 Many came to him and were saying, \u201cJohn did no sign-miracle but everything John said about this man was true.
\n10:42 And many believed in him there.<\/p>\n
Chapter Eleven<\/p>\n
11:1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
\n11:2 It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
\n11:3 So the sisters sent word to him [Jesus] saying, \u201cLord, the one you love is sick.\u201d
\n11:4 But when Jesus heard this, he said, \u201cThis sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.\u201d
\n11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
\n11:6 So when he [Jesus] heard that he [Lazarus] was sick, he then remained two days longer in the place where he was.
\n11:7 Then after this he said to the disciples, \u201cLet us go to Judea again.\u201d
\n11:8 The disciples said to him, \u201cRabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?\u201d
\n11:9 Jesus answered, \u201cAre there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
\n11:10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.\u201d
\n11:11 He said these things and after that he said to them,
\n\u201cLazarus, our friend has fallen asleep, but I am going that I may awaken him.\u201d
\n11:12 Then His disciples said, \u201cLord, if he sleeps he will get better.\u201d
\n11:13 But Jesus had been speaking concerning his death, but they thought that he was speaking about the rest of sleep [literal sleep].
\n11:14 Then Jesus told them plainly, \u201cLazarus is dead
\n11:15 and I am glad for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.\u201d
\n11:16 Then Thomas, who is called Didymus [the twin] said to his fellow disciples, \u201cLet us also go, that we may die with him.\u201d
\n11:17 So when Jesus arrived, he found that he [Lazarus] had been already in the tomb four days.
\n11:18 Now Bethany was about two miles near Jerusalem,
\n11:19 Now many from among the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them over the loss of their brother.
\n11:20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house.
\n11:21 Martha then said to Jesus, \u201cLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
\n11:22 \u201cEven now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.\u201d
\n11:23 Jesus said to her, \u201cYour brother will rise again.\u201d
\n11:24 Martha said to him, \u201cI know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.\u201d
\n11:25 Jesus said to her, \u201cI am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me will live even if he dies,
\n11:26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die forevermore. Do you believe this?\u201d
\n11:27 She said to Him, \u201cYes, Lord; I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world.\u201d
\n11:28 And when she [Martha] had said this, she went back and called Mary her sister saying secretly, \u201cThe Teacher is here and is calling for you.\u201d
\n11:29 And when she [Mary] heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
\n11:30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.
\n11:31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
\n11:32 When Mary came where Jesus was, she saw him, and fell at his feet, saying to him, \u201cLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.\u201d
\n11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also mourning, he was indignant in spirit and was troubled,
\n11:34 and said, \u201cWhere have you laid him?\u201d They said to him, \u201cLord, come and see.\u201d
\n11:35 Jesus wept.
\n11:36 So the Jews were saying, \u201cSee how he loved him!\u201d
\n11:37 But some of them said, \u201cCould not this one [Jesus] who opened the eyes of the blind done something to keep this one [Lazarus] from dying?
\n11:38 Then Jesus, again being indignant within,
\ncame to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
\n11:39 Jesus said, \u201cMove away the stone.\u201d Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to him, \u201cLord, by this time there will be a smell, for it has been four days.\u201d
\n11:40 Jesus said to her, \u201cDid I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?\u201d
\n11:41 So they removed away the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes, and said, \u201cFather, I thank you that you have heard me.
\n11:42 I knew that you always hear me but because of the people standing around, I said it, so that they may believe you sent me.
\n11:43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, \u201cLazarus, come forth.\u201d
\n11:44 The one who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with strips of cloth, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, \u201cUnwrap him, and let him go.\u201d
\n11:45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what he had done, believed in him.
\n11:46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
\n11:47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and were saying, \u201cWhat are we doing? For this man is doing many signs.
\n11:48 \u201cIf we let him go on like this, all men will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.\u201d
\n11:49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, \u201cYou know nothing at all,
\n11:50 nor do you realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.\u201d
\n11:51 Now he did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
\n11:52 and not for the nation only but in order that the children of God who are scattered might be brought together into one.
\n11:53 So from that day they resolved together to kill him.
\n11:54 Therefore Jesus no longer walked publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and he remained there with his disciples.
\n11:55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country before the Passover to purify themselves.
\n11:56 So they were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple,\u201cWhat do you think; that he will not come to the feast at all?\u201d
\n11:57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.<\/p>\n
Chapter Twelve<\/p>\n
12:1 Then Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
\n12:2 So they made him a supper there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him.
\n12:3 Then Mary took a pound of very pure nard ointment, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
\n12:4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, who was intending to betray him, said,
\n12:5 \u201cWhy was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?\u201d
\n12:6 Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, holding [the keeper of] the money box, he used to steal what was in it.
\n12:7 So Jesus said, \u201cLet her alone, she has keep it for the day of my burial.
\n12:8 \u201cFor you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.\u201d
\n12:9 The large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead.
\n12:10 And the chief priests planned that they might put Lazarus to death also;
\n12:11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away [from them] and were believing in Jesus.
\n12:12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
\n12:13 They took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and kept shouting,
\n\u201cHosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel.\u201d
\n12:14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
\n12:15 \u201cDo not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion;
\nbehold, your king is coming,
\nseated on a donkey\u2019s colt.\u201d
\n12:16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified then they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done these things to him.
\n12:17 So the crowd who was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead
\ncontinued to testify about it.
\n12:18 For this reason also the crowd went and met him, because they heard that he had done this sign.
\n12:19 So the Pharisees said to one another, \u201cYou see that you can do nothing; look, the world has gone after him.\u201d
\n12:20 Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast.
\n12:21 Then these [Greeks] came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, \u201cSir, we wish to see Jesus.\u201d
\n12:22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.
\n12:23 And Jesus replied to them saying, \u201cThe hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.\u201d
\n12:24 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
\n12:25 He who loves his life loses it and he who hates his life in this world, keeps it to eternal life.
\n12:26 \u201cIf anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also; If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
\n12:27 \u201cNow my self has become troubled. And what shall I say, Father deliver me from this hour? But for this reason, I came to this hour.
\n12:28 \u201cFather, glorify your name.\u201d Then a voice came from heaven, \u201cI have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.\u201d
\n12:29 The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others were saying, \u201cAn angel has spoken to Him.\u201d
\n12:30 Jesus answered and said, \u201cThis voice has not come for my sake, but for your sakes.
\n12:31 \u201cNow is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be thrown out.
\n12:32 \u201cAnd I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.\u201d
\n12:33 Now he was saying this to indicate what kind of death he was going to die.
\n12:34 The crowd then responded Him, \u201cWe have heard from the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; How can you say, \u2018The Son of Man must be lifted up\u2019? Who is this Son of Man?\u201d
\n12:35 So Jesus said to them, \u201cFor a little while longer the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. He who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
\n12:36 \u201cWhile you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.\u201d These things Jesus spoke, and having went away, was hidden from them.
\n12:37 Although he had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him,
\n12:38 so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, which said:
\n\u201cLord, who has believed our message
\nand to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?\u201d
\n:39 For this reason they were not able to believe, for again, Isaiah said,
\n:40 \u201cHe has blinded their eyes
\nand hardened their hearts
\nin order that they may not see with their eyes,
\nand understand with their heart
\nand turn to God
\nand I would heal them.
\n:41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his [Christ\u2019s]
\nglory and he spoke about him.
\n:42 Nevertheless, many at the same time believed in him but on account of the Pharisees, they would not confess
\n[Jesus to be the Messiah] so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.
\n:43 for they loved the praise of men rather than the praise of God.
\n:44 And Jesus cried out and said, \u201cHe who believes in me, does not believe in me but in the One who sent me,
\n:45 \u201cand he who sees me sees the one who sent me.
\n:46 \u201cI have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me will not remain in darkness.
\n:47 \u201cIf anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; For I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
\n:48 \u201cHe who rejects me and does not receive my words,
\nhas one who judges him; the word which I spoke will judge him on the last day.
\n:49 For I did not speak from myself [own initiative] but the Father himself who sent me has given me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.
\n:50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So
\nthe things I say, I say just as the Father has told me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chapter Thirteen<\/p>\n
13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come that he would depart out of this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
\n13:2 During the evening meal, the devil had already put in his own [the devil\u2019s] heart that Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,
\n13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and he was going back to God,
\n13:4 he got up from the meal and put aside his garments and taking a towel, he wrapped it around himself.
\n13:5 Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciple\u2019s feet and to wipe them with the towel
\nhe had wrapped around himself.
\n13:6 Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, \u201cLord, are you going wash my feet?\u201d
\n13:7 Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cWhat I do, you do
\nnot understand now but you will understand after these things.\u201d
\n13:8 Peter said to Him, \u201cYou shall never wash my feet!\u201d
\nJesus answered him, \u201cIf I do not wash you, you have no share with me.\u201d
\n13:9 Simon Peter said to Him, \u201cLord, then not only my feet, but wash also my hands and my head.\u201d
\n13:10 Jesus said to him, \u201cHe who has bathed has no need to wash but is completely clean. And you [pl.] are clean but not all.
\n13:11 For he knew the one who was betraying him; for this reason he said, \u201cNot all of you are clean.\u201d
\n13:12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments [to put back on] and reclined at the table again,
\nhe said to them, \u201cDo you know what I have done for you?
\n13:13 \u201cYou call me \u2018Teacher\u2019 and \u2018Lord,\u2019 and rightly so, for
\nI am.
\n13:14 \u201cIf I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet.
\n13:15 \u201cFor I have given you an example that just as I have done for you, you should do.
\n13:16 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
\n13:17 \u201cIf you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
\n13:18 I do not speak concerning all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but so that the Scripture may be fulfilled,
\n\u201cHe who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.\u201d
\n13:19 For now, I am telling you before it happens, so that you may believe when it happens that I Am
\n13:20 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.\u201d
\n13:21 When Jesus had said this, he became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray me.\u201d
\n13:22 The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one he was speaking.
\n13:23 There was reclining one his disciples at the right side of Jesus, whom Jesus loved.
\n13:24 So Simon Peter gestured to him, to ask who it is of whom he is speaking.
\n13:25 So that one, [the disciple whom Jesus loved] leaning back to Jesus\u2019 chest, said to him, \u201cLord, who is it?\u201d
\n13:26 Jesus answered, \u201cIt is the one to whom I shall dip the morsel and then give it to him.\u201d Then he dipped the morsel he took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
\n13:27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, \u201cWhat you are about do, do quickly.\u201d
\n13:28 Now none of those reclining at the table knew for what reason he said this to him.
\n13:29 For some were thinking, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, \u201cBuy the things we have need of for the feast\u201d; or give something to the poor.
\n13:30 So taking the morsel he went out immediately; Now it was night.
\n13:31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, \u201cNow the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him;
\n13:32 [If God is glorified in him,] God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately.
\n13:33 \u201cLittle children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews, \u2018Where I am going you are not able to come, now I also say to you.\u2019
\n13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
\n13:35 \u201cBy this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.\u201d
\n13:36 Simon Peter said to Him, \u201cLord, where are you going
\nJesus answered, \u201cWhere I go, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow later.\u201d
\n13:37 Peter said to Him, \u201cLord, why can I not follow you now. I will lay down my life for you.
\n13:38 Jesus answered, \u201cWill you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny me three times.<\/p>\n
Chapter Fourteen<\/p>\n
14:1 \u201cDo not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me.
\n14:2 \u201cIn my Father\u2019s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
\n14:3 \u201cAnd if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you will be also.
\n14:4 \u201cAnd where I am going, you know the way.
\n14:5 Thomas said to Him, \u201cLord, we do not know where you are going, how are we able to know the way?\u201d
\n14:6 Jesus said to him, \u201cI Am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.
\n14:7 If you have known me, you will know my Father also. And from now on you do know him and have seen him.\u201d
\n14:8 Philip said to Him, \u201cLord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.\u201d
\n14:9 Jesus said to him, \u201cHave I been with you so long, and yet you have not come to know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, \u2018Show us the Father\u2019?
\n14:10 \u201cDo you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak
\nfrom my own but the Father abiding in me does his works.
\n14:11 \u201cBelieve me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not believe me, believe because of the works themselves.
\n14:12 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
\n14:13 \u201cWhatever you ask in my name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
\n14:14 \u201cIf you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
\n14:15 \u201cIf you love me, you will keep my commandments.
\n14:16 \u201cI will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate, that he may be with you forever;
\n14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see him or know him, but you know him because he abides with you and will be in you.
\n14:18 \u201cI will not abandon you as orphans; I will come to you.
\n14:19 \u201cAfter a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also.
\n14:20 \u201cIn that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
\n14:21 \u201cHe who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.\u201d
\n14:22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, \u201cLord, what has happened that you are going to disclose yourself to us and not to the world?\u201d
\n14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cIf anyone loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make Our dwelling place with him.
\n14:24 \u201cHe who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine, but the Father\u2019s who sent me.
\n14:25 \u201cThese things I have spoken to you while remaining with you.
\n14:26 \u201cBut the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance everything that I said to you.
\n14:27 \u201cPeace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.
\n14:28 \u201cYou heard that I said to you, \u2018I go away, and I will come to you.\u2019 If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
\n14:29 \u201cNow I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
\n14:30 \u201cI will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing on [power over] me;
\n14:31 but that the world may know that I love the Father,
\nI do just as the Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go from here.<\/p>\n
Chapter Fifteen<\/p>\n
15:1 I am the true vine and my Father is the vinedresser.
\n15:2 \u201cEvery branch in me that does not bear fruit, he [the Father] takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, he prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.
\n15:3 \u201cYou are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
\n15:4 \u201cAbide in me, and I will abide in you. Just as the branch is not able to bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither you unless you abide in me.
\n15:5 \u201cI am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in me and I in him, he bears much fruit, because without me, you can do nothing.
\n15:6 \u201cIf anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown out as a branch and dries up and such are gathered and thrown into the fire and are burned.
\n15:7 \u201cIf you abide in me, and my words abide in you,
\nwhatever you wish, ask, and it will be done for you.
\n15:8 \u201cMy Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and [show that] you are my disciples.
\n15:9 \u201cJust as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; abide in my love.
\n15:10 \u201cIf you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love; just as I have kept my Father\u2019s commandments and abide in his love.
\n15:11 \u201cThese things I have spoken to you so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be made full.
\n15:12 \u201cThis is my commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
\n15:13 No one has greater love than this\u2014that one lays down his life for his friends.
\n15:14 \u201cYou are My friends if you do what I command you.
\n15:15 \u201cNo longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
\n15:16 \u201cYou did not choose me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in my name he may give to you.
\n15:17 This I command you that you love one another.
\n15:18 \u201cIf the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.
\n15:19 \u201cIf you were of [belonged to] the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of [belong] the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
\n15:20 \u201cRemember the word which I spoke to you, \u2018A slave is not greater than his master.\u2019 If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.
\n15:21 But they will do all these things to you on account
\nof my name, because they do not know the One who sent me.
\n15:22 \u201cIf I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.15:23 \u201cHe who hates me also hates my Father.
\n15:24 \u201cIf I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen the deeds and hated me and my Father as well.
\n15:25 But that the word which was written in their law might be fulfilled saying that, \u201cThey hated me without cause.\u201d
\n15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father\u2014the Spirit of Truth, who comes out from the Father, he will testify about me,
\n15:27 and you must also testify because you have been with me from the beginning.<\/p>\n
Chapter Sixteen<\/p>\n
16:1 \u201cThese things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.
\n16:2 \u201cThey will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you will think that he is offering service to God.
\n16:3 \u201cThese things they will do because they have not known the Father or me.
\n16:4 \u201cBut these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
\n16:5 \u201cBut now I am going to him who sent me; and none of you asks me, \u2018Where are you going?\u2019
\n16:6 \u201cBut because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
\n16:7 \u201cBut I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
\n16:8 \u201cAnd he, when he comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
\n16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
\n16:10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see me;
\n16:11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
\n16:12 \u201cI have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
\n16:13 \u201cBut when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own initiative, but whatever he hears, he will speak; and he will tell to you what is to come.
\n16:14 He will glorify me, because he will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you.
\n16:15 Everything that the Father has is mine; on account of this I said that he [the Spirit] will receive from me and will tell it to you.
\n16:16 In a little while, you will no longer see me, and again and then in a little while you will see me.
\n16:17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, \u201cWhat is this he is telling us, \u2018In a little while you will
\nnot see me; and again in a little while you will see me
\nand, \u2018because I go to the Father\u2019?\u201d
\n16:18 So they were saying, \u201cWhat is this that he says, \u2018in a little while\u2019? We do not know what he is saying.\u201d
\n16:19 Jesus knew that they wished to question him, and he said to them, \u201cAre you asking one another about this, that I said, \u2018In a little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me\u2019?
\n16:20 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.
\n16:21 \u201cWhenever a woman gives birth she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the suffering on account of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.
\n16:22 So you too have pain now but I will see you again
\nand your heart will be joyful and no one will take your joy away from you.
\n16:23 In that day, you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.
\n16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive it, so that your joy may be complete.
\n16:25 \u201cThese things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative speech, but will tell you plainly of the Father.
\n16:26 \u201cIn that day you will ask in my name, and I am not saying to you that I will ask of the Father on your behalf;
\n16:27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
\n16:28 \u201cI came from the Father and have come into the world; in turn, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.\u201d
\n16:29 His disciples said, \u201cLook, now you are speaking plainly and are not using figurative language.
\n16:30 \u201cNow we know that you know all things, and have no need for anyone to question you; by this we believe that you came from God.\u201d
\n16:31 Jesus answered them, \u201cDo you now believe?
\n16:32 Behold, an hour is coming and has come, when you are to be scattered, each to his own [home], and leave me alone, yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.
\n16:33 \u201cThese things I have spoken to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.<\/p>\n
Chapter Seventeen<\/p>\n
17:1 After Jesus said this, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, \u201cFather, the hour has come; glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you,
\n17:2 just as you have given him authority over all flesh [humanity] that to all whom you have given him, he may give eternal life.
\n17:3 \u201cNow this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
\n17:4 \u201cI glorified you on the earth, having accomplished the work which you have given me to do.
\n17:5 \u201cAnd now, Father, glorify me with yourself, with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.
\n17:6 \u201cI have revealed your name to the men you gave me out of the world. They were yours and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
\n17:7 \u201cNow they know that everything you have given me is from you,
\n17:8 because the words which you gave me I have given to them; and they received them and truly know that I came from you and they believed that you sent me.
\n17:9 \u201cI ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom you have given me; for they are yours;
\n17:10 and all things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them.
\n17:11 And I am no longer in the world but they are in the world and I am coming to you, Holy Father, keep them in your name which you have given me, that they may be one even as we are one.
\n17:12 \u201cWhen I was with them I was keeping them in your name that you have given me and I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the son doomed to destruction so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.
\n17:13 \u201cBut now I come to you and am saying these things in the world, so they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
\n17:14 \u201cI have given them your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
\n17:15 \u201cI do not ask you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
\n17:16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
\n17:17 \u201cSanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
\n17:18 \u201cJust as you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
\n17:19 \u201cAnd I set myself apart on behalf of them, so they they themselves also may be set apart in truth.
\n17:20 \u201cI do not ask on behalf of these disciples only but on behalf of those who believe in me through their [the disciple\u2019s] word [testimony];
\n17:21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me.
\n17:22 \u201cThe glory which you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as we are one;
\n17:23 \u201cI in them and you in me, that they may be completely unified so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them, even as you have loved me.
\n17:24 \u201cFather, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they can see my glory that you gave me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.
\n17:25 \u201cRighteous Father, though the world does not know you, yet I have known you; and these have known that you sent me;
\n17:26 and I have made your name known to them, and will make it known so that the love you have loved me with may be in them, and I may be in them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chapter Eighteen<\/p>\n
18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the ravine of the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, in which he and his disciples entered.
\n18:2 Now Judas also, who was betraying him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
\n18:3 Then Judas having acquired a detachment [of soldiers] and some officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
\n18:4 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, \u201cWhom do you seek?\u201d
\n18:5 They answered him, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.\u201d he said to them, \u201cI am he.\u201d And Judas also, who was betraying him, was standing with them.
\n18:6 So when he said to them, \u201cI am,\u201d they moved back and fell to the ground.
\n18:7 Therefore He again asked them, \u201cWhom do you seek?\u201d And they said, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.\u201d
\n18:8 Jesus answered, \u201cI told you that I am; so if you seek me, let these men go away,\u201d
\n18:9 so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled,
\n\u201cOf those whom you have given me I lost not one.\u201d
\n18:10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest\u2019s servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant\u2019s name was Malchus.
\n18:11 So Jesus said to Peter, \u201cPut the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?\u201d
\n18:12 Then the Roman detachment and their commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound him,
\n18:13 and led him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
\n18:14 Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
\n18:15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Now that disciple was known to the high priest [Annas], and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest,
\n18:16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
\n18:17 Then a slave-girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, \u201cYou are not also one of this man\u2019s disciples, are you?\u201d He said, \u201cI am not.\u201d
\n18:18 Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, because it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
\n18:19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
\n18:20 Jesus answered him, \u201cI have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews [people] gather together; and I spoke nothing in secret.
\n18:21 \u201cWhy do you question me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; Look, these know what I said.\u201d
\n18:22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, \u201cIs that the way you answer the high priest?\u201d
\n18:23 Jesus answered him, \u201cIf I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?\u201d
\n18:24 So Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
\n18:25 Now Simon Peter was standing there and warming himself. So they said to him, \u201cYou are not also one of his disciples, are you?\u201d He denied it, and said, \u201cI am not.\u201d
\n18:26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, \u201cDid I not see you in the garden with him?\u201d
\n18:27 Again Peter denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.
\n18:28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
\n18:29 Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, \u201cWhat accusation do you bring against this man?\u201d
\n18:30 They answered and said to him, \u201cIf this man were not an criminal [lit. evil doer], we would not have delivered him to you.\u201d
\n18:31 So Pilate said to them, \u201cTake him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.\u201d The Jews said to him, \u201cWe are not authorized to legally execute anyone.\u201d
\n18:32 This happened to fulfill the word of Jesus which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he was about to die.
\n18:33 Therefore, Pilate entered back into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to him, \u201cAre you the King of the Jews?\u201d
\n18:34 Jesus answered, \u201cAre you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about me?\u201d
\n18:35 Pilate answered, \u201cI am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me; what have you done?\u201d
\n18:36 Jesus answered, \u201cMy kingdom is not out of this world. If my kingdom were out of this world, then my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.
\n18:37 Then Pilate said to him, \u201cSo then, you are a king.\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cYou say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.\u201d
\n18:38 Pilate said to him, \u201cWhat is truth?\u201d And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, \u201cI find no guilt in him.
\n18:39 \u201cBut it is your custom that I release one man for you at Passover. So do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?\u201d
\n18:40 Then they shouted back saying, \u201cNot this man, but Barabbas.\u201d Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.<\/p>\n
Chapter Nineteen<\/p>\n
19:1 Then Pilate then took Jesus and scourged him.
\n19:2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe;
\n19:3 and they were coming up to him saying, \u201cHail, King of the Jews!\u201d and kept striking him in the face.
\n19:4 Pilate came out again and said to them [Jews],
\n\u201cLook, I am bringing him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.\u201d
\n19:5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, \u201cBehold, the Man!\u201d
\n19:6 Therefore, when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out saying, \u201cCrucify, crucify!\u201d Pilate said to them, \u201cTake him yourselves and crucify him, for I do not find in him guilt.\u201d
\n19:7 The Jews answered him, \u201cWe have a law, and by that law he ought to die because he made himself out to be the Son of God.\u201d
\n19:8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;
\n19:9 and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, \u201cWhere are you from?\u201d But Jesus did not give to him an answer.
\n19:10 So Pilate said to him, \u201cYou do not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?\u201d
\n19:11 Jesus replied, \u201cYou would have no authority over me at all, unless it was given to you from above. The one who delivered me to you has the greater sin.
\n19:12 From this point on, Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out saying, \u201cIf you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.\u201d
\n19:13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
\n19:14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, \u201cLook your king!\u201d
\n19:15 So they cried out, \u201cTake him away, Take him away, crucify him!\u201d Pilate said to them, \u201cShall I crucify your King?\u201d The chief priests answered, \u201cWe have no king but Caesar.\u201d
\n19:16 So he then handed him over to them to be crucified. Therefore, they took Jesus,
\n19:17 and carrying his own cross, he went out to what was called a The Place of the Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.
\n19:18 There they crucified him, and with him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in the middle.
\n19:19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, \u201cJesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews.\u201d
\n19:20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.
\n19:21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, \u201cDo not write, \u2018The King of the Jews\u2019; but that this man said, \u2018I am King of the Jews.
\n19:22 Pilate answered, \u201cWhat I have written I have written.\u201d
\n19:23 Now when the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and made four shares, a share for each soldier, and a long tunic remained. (Now the tunic was seamless, woven from top to bottom as a single piece.)
\n19:24 So they said to one another, \u201cLet us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see whose it shall be\u201d; so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: \u201cThey divided my clothes for themselves and upon my clothing they cast lots.\u201d
\nSo the soldiers did these things.
\n19:25 Now standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother\u2019s sister, and Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
\n19:26 When Jesus then saw his mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother,
\n\u201cWoman, behold, your son!\u201d
\n19:27 Then he said to the disciple, \u201cBehold, your mother!\u201d From that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
\n19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order to fulfill the Scripture, said, \u201cI am thirsty.\u201d
\n19:29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge soaked full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to his mouth.
\n19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, \u201cIt is finished!\u201d And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
\n19:31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
\n19:32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with him;
\n19:33 but when they came to Jesus, they saw him already dead, they did not break his legs.
\n19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
\n19:35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
\n19:36 For these things happened that Scripture might be fulfilled, \u201cNot a bone of his will be broken,\u201d
\n19:37 And again another scripture says, \u201cThey will look on the whom they have pierced.\u201d
\n19:38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one because of fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus and Pilate gave permission. So he came and took away his body.
\n19:39 Nicodemus, who had earlier come to him [Jesus] by night also came carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred liters [75 lbs.].
\n19:40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
\n19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
\n19:42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they put Jesus there.<\/p>\n
Chapter Twenty<\/p>\n
20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
\n20:2 So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, \u201cThey have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put him.\u201d
\n20:3 So Peter and the other disciple went out, and they were coming to the tomb.
\n20:4 The two were running together and the other disciple ran ahead being faster than Peter and came to the tomb first;
\n20:5 and bending down he saw the linen wrappings but did not enter in the tomb.
\n20:6 And then Simon Peter came following him and entered into the tomb and he saw the linen wrappings lying there,
\n20:7 and the face-cloth which was on his head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
\n20:8 So then the other disciple, who had come first also entered into the tomb and saw and believed.
\n20:9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
\n20:10 So the disciples went away again to their own homes.
\n20:11 Now Mary had been standing outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb.
\n20:12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus was lying.
\n20:13 And they said to her, \u201caWoman, why are you weeping?\u201d She said to them, \u201cBecause they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him.\u201d
\n20:14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
\n20:15 Jesus said to her, \u201cWoman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?\u201d Thinking that he was the gardener, she said to him, \u201clord, [sir], if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.\u201d
\n20:16 Jesus said to her, \u201cMary!\u201d Having turned she said to him in Hebrew, \u201cRabboni!\u201d (which means, Teacher).
\n20:17 Jesus replied, \u201cDo not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brethren and tell them, \u201cI am ascending to my Father and your Father and my God and your God.
\n20:18 Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, \u201cI have seen the Lord,\u201d and that he had said these things to her.
\n20:19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d
\n20:20 And when he had said this, he showed both his hands and his side to them. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
\n20:21 So Jesus said to them again, \u201cPeace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also am sending you.\u201d
\n20:22 And after he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, \u201cReceive the Holy Spirit.
\n20:23 If you forgive the sins of anyone, they have been forgiven them; If you retain the sins of anyone, they have been retained.
\n20:24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
\n20:25 So the other disciples were saying to him, \u201cWe have seen the Lord!\u201d But he said to them, \u201cUnless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.\u201d
\n20:26 After eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut [secured], and stood in among them and said, \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d
\n20:27 Then he said to Thomas, \u201cReach here with your finger, and see my hands; and reach here your hand and put it here into my side; and do not be unbelieving but believing.
\n20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, \u201cMy Lord and my God!\u201d
\n20:29 Jesus said to him, \u201cBecause you have seen me, have you have believed. Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.\u201d
\n20:30 Therefore many other sign-miracles Jesus also did in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
\n20:31 but these have been written so that you may keep believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in his name.<\/p>\n
Chapter Twenty-One<\/p>\n
21:1 After these things Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way.
\n21:2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael (who was from Cana in Galilee), the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples of his were together.
\n21:3 Simon Peter said to them, \u201cI am going fishing.\u201d They said to him, \u201cWe will also come with you.\u201d They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.
\n21:4 When it was already early morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
\n21:5 So Jesus said to them, \u201cYoung men [lit. Children], you do not have any fish, do you?\u201d They answered Him, \u201cNo.\u201d
\n21:6 And he said to them, \u201cCast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.\u201d So they cast the net and then they were not able to haul it in because of the large number of fish.
\n21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, \u201cIt is the Lord.\u201d So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped [for work]) and threw himself into the sea.
\n21:8 But the other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.
\n21:9 So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire laid out and fish placed on it, and bread.
\n21:10 Jesus said to them, \u201cBring some of the fish you have just caught.\u201d
\n21:11 So Simon Peter went aboard and pulled the net to the land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; though there were so many the net was not torn.
\n21:12 Jesus said to them, \u201cCome and have breakfast.\u201d None of the disciples dared to question him, \u201cWho are you?\u201d knowing that it was the Lord.
\n21:13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish in the same way.
\n21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples, after he was raised from the dead.
\n21:15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, \u201cSimon, son of John, do you love me more than these?\u201d He said to him, \u201cYes, Lord; you know that I love you.\u201d He said to him, \u201cFeed my lambs.\u201d
\n21:16 He said to him again a second time, \u201cSimon, son of John, do you love me?\u201d He said to Him, \u201cYes, Lord; You know that I love You.\u201d He said to him, \u201cShepherd my sheep.\u201d
\n21:17 He said to him the third time, \u201cSimon, son of John, do you love me?\u201d Peter was hurt because he said to him the third time, \u201cDo you love me?\u201d And he said to him, \u201cLord, you know all things; you know that I love you.\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cTend my sheep.
\n21:18 \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself [when dressing] and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and carry you where you do not want to go.\u201d
\n21:19 Now this he said, indicating by what kind of death he [Peter] would glorify God. And after he had said this to him, he said, \u201cFollow me.\u201d
\n21:20 Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on his chest at the supper and said, \u201cLord, who is the one who betrays you?\u201d
\n21:21 So when Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, \u201cLord, what about him?\u201d
\n21:22 Jesus said to him, \u201cIf I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!\u201d
\n21:23 Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die, but Jesus did not say to him that he would not die but only, \u201cIf I want him to remain until I come back, what is that to you?\u201d
\n21:24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and who wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
\n21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
