Chapter One<\/p>\n
1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel, son of Pethuel:<\/p>\n
1:2 Listen to this, you elders [leaders];
\ngive ear [pay attention], all inhabitants of the land.
\nHas anything like this ever happened in your days [life]
\nor the days [life] of your fathers [ancestors]?
\n1:3 Tell your sons about it,
\nand your sons, their sons,
\nand their sons to the next generation.
\n1:4 What the gnawing locust has left,
\nthe swarming locust has eaten;
\nand what the hopping locust have left,
\nthe young stripping locust have eaten.
\n1:5 Wake up drunkards and weep!
\nWail all you wine-drinkers
\nbecause the sweet-wine
\nhas been cut off from your mouth.
\n1:6 For a nation has come upon my land
\nmighty and there is not number [without number];
\nIts teeth are the teeth of a lion,
\nand its incisors [fangs] like those of a lioness.
\n1:7 It has laid my vines to waste
\nand my fig trees to splinter [ruined]
\nIt has striped them bare [of bark] and
\nthrown them away;
\nTheir branches have become white.
\n1:8 Wail [lament] like a young virgin girded [clothed]
\nin sackcloth,
\nfor the bridegroom of her youth.
\n1:9 The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off
\nfrom the house of the LORD.
\nThe priest, who are the ministers of the LORD are in mourning.
\n1:10 The field is ruined,
\nthe ground is in mourning
\nbecause the grain is destroyed
\nThe new [fresh] wine dries up
\nfresh [olive] oil languishes.
\n1:11 Be ashamed farmers,
\nWail, vinedressers,
\nover the wheat and the barley
\nbecause the harvest of the field is destroyed.
\n1:12 The vine dries up
\nand the fig tree languishes;
\nthe pomegranate, date, and apple [tree] as well.
\n\u2014all the trees of the field have dried up.
\nIndeed, the joy from the sons of men [the people] has dried up!
\n1:13 Gird on [get dressed with sackcloth] and lament priests;
\nwail, you who minister at the altar!
\nCome spend the night in sackcloth,
\nministers of my God;
\nfor the grain offering and the drink offering
\nare withheld from the house [temple]
\nof your God.
\n1:14 Declare holy [consecrate] a fast [day],
\ncall a sacred assembly.
\nGather the elders
\nand all the inhabitants of the land
\nto the house of the LORD your God,
\nand cry out to the LORD.
\n1:15 Alas for the day!
\nFor the day of the LORD is near;
\nit will come as destruction from the Almighty.
\n1:16 Has not food been cut off before our eyes,
\nand gladness and joy from the house of our God?
\n1:17 The seeds shrivel
\nunder their shovels [or clods of earth];
\nThe storehouses lie desolate,
\nthe granaries have been broken down,
\nfor the grain has dried up.
\n1:18 How the cattle groan!
\nThe herds of livestock wander around in confusion, because there is no pasture for them;
\neven the flocks of sheep are suffering.
\n1:19 To you, LORD, I cry [for help],
\nfor fire has consumed the grassy pastures [of wilderness]
\nand the flame has burned up all the trees of the field.
\n1:20 Even the beasts of the field [wild animals]
\nlong for you [for food and water];
\nfor the streams [sources] of water have dried up;
\nfor fire has consumed the grassy pastures [of wilderness]<\/p>\n
Chapter Two<\/p>\n
2:1 Blow a trumpet in Zion,
\nand sound an alarm on My holy mountain!
\nLet all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
\nfor the day of the LORD is coming.
\nSurely it is near,
\n2:2 a day of darkness and gloom,
\na day of clouds and thick darkness [blackness].
\nLike dawn is spread over the mountains,
\na great and powerful people [army]\u2014
\nThere has never been anything like it
\nfrom ancient times and after it\u2014
\nit will not happen again, for years of generation to generation [to come].
\n2:3 Before them fire devours,
\nbehind them a blazes burns.
\nThe land is like the garden of Eden before them,
\nbehind them a desolate waste
\nand nothing at all escapes them.
\n2:4 They have the appearance of horses;
\nthey gallop like war horses.
\n2:5 With a noise as of chariots,
\nthey leap over the tops of the mountains,
\nlike the sound [crackling] of fire consuming stubble,
\nas a mighty people [army] drawn up for battle.
\n2:6 Before it [army], the people [plural] writhe in fear
\nAll their faces turn pale.
\n2:7 Like warriors, they charge
\nas men of battle [soldiers], they scale the wall;
\nand each marches [advances] in his line
\nand they do not deviate from their paths.
\n2:8 They do not crowd each other,
\neach marches straight ahead.
\nWhen they burst through the defenses,
\nthey do not break ranks.
\n2:9 They rush into the city,
\nthey run on [scale up] the wall;
\nThey climb up into the houses,
\nthey go through the windows like a thief.
\n2:10 Before them the earth quakes,
\nthe heavens tremble,
\nThe sun and the moon grow dark;
\nand the stars withdraw [lose] their brightness.
\n2:11 The LORD gives [forth] His voice before His army;
\nSurely his military encampment is extremely large,
\nfor mighty [in size] is the one [army] who executes his commands.
\nIndeed, the day of the LORD is awesome
\nand very terrifying\u2014who can endure it?
\n2:12 \u201cYet even now,\u201d declares the LORD,
\n\u201cReturn to Me with all your heart,
\nwith fasting, weeping and mourning;
\n2:13 Tear at your hearts and not merely your garments.\u201d
\nReturn to the LORD your God,
\nfor he is merciful and compassionate,
\nslow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness
\nand relenting of evil.
\n2:14 Who knows whether He will turn and relent
\nand leave a blessing behind Him [LORD],
\na grain offering and a drink offering to offer
\nfor the LORD your God?
\n2:15 Blow a trumpet in Zion,
\nDeclare holy [consecrate] a fast [day],
\ncall a sacred assembly.
\n2:16 Gather the people, sanctify the assembly,
\nassemble the elders, gather the children, and the nursing infants.
\nLet the bridegroom come out of his room
\nand the bride out of her bridal chamber.
\n2:17 Let the priests, those who serve the LORD,
\nweep between the vestibule [front entrance way] and back to the altar.
\nLet them say, \u201cHave compassion [and spare], O LORD, on your people,
\nand do not give over your inheritance to be mocked,
\na byword among the nations.
\nWhy should the people say among the people,
\n\u201c \u2018Where is your God?\u2019 \u201d
\n2:18 Then the LORD became zealous for his land;
\nhe had compassion on his people.
\n2:19 The LORD answered and said to his people,
\n\u201cBehold, I am going to send you grain, new wine and oil,
\nand you will be fully satisfied with it [them]
\nI will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
\n2:20 I will remove the one from the [King of] northern [horde] far from you,
\nand I will drive it into a parched and desolate land,
\n[the desert]
\nand its vanguard [troops in front] into the eastern sea, [Dead Sea]
\nand the rear guard into the western sea [Mediterranean Sea].
\nand its stench will rise up and its foul smell will go up,
\nand he\/it has done great things.
\n2:21 Do not fear, O land, rejoice and be glad,
\nbecause the LORD has done great things.
\n2:22 Do not fear, beasts of the field,
\nbecause the pastures of the wilderness
\nhave turned green,
\nFor the tree has borne its fruit,
\nthe fig tree and the vine have yielded in full.
\n2:23 So rejoice, O sons [citizens] of Zion,
\nAnd be glad in the LORD your God;
\nFor He has given you that which instructs [moreh] in righteousness
\nAnd He has poured down for you the rain,
\nthe early [autumn] rain and the late [spring] rain
\nas before.
\n2:24 The threshing floors are full of grain;
\nthe vats will overflow with fresh wine and oil.
\n2:25 I will make up for the years
\nthat the swarming locust have eaten [your crops]
\nthat is the hopping locust.
\nthe stripping locust and the gnawing locust,
\nmy great army that I sent against you.
\n2:26 You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied
\nand praise the name of the LORD your God,
\nwho has done wondrously for you;
\nThen My people will never be put to shame.
\n2:27 \u201cThus you will know that I am in the midst of Israel,
\nand that I am the LORD your God,
\nand there is no other;
\nand My people will never be put to shame.
\n2:28 Now it will come about after this,
\nI will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh
\nand your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
\nyour old men will dream dreams,
\nyour young men will see visions.
\n2:29 \u201cEven on the male and female servants
\nin those days, I will pour out My Spirit.
\n2:30 \u201cI will display [lit. give] wonders in the
\nheavens [sky] and on the earth,
\nblood, fire and columns of smoke.
\n2:31 The sun[light] will be turned to darkness
\nand the moon to [the color] of blood,
\nbefore the day of the LORD comes\u2013
\nthat great and awesome day!
\n2:32 \u201cAnd it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD will be delivered
\nFor on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
\nthere will be a deliverance, [of the remnant]
\neven among the survivors,
\nwhom the LORD calls.<\/p>\n
Chapter Three<\/p>\n
3:1 \u201cFor behold, in those days and at that time,
\nwhen I return the captivity to Judah and Jerusalem,
\n3:2 Then I will gather all the nations and bring them
\ndown to the valley of Jehoshaphat.
\nThen I will enter into judgment with them there
\non behalf of my people and my inheritance, Israel,
\nwhom they have scattered among the nations.
\n3:3 \u201cThey have also cast lots for My people,
\nand they have traded a boy for a prostitute
\nand sold a girl for wine that they may drink.
\n3:4 \u201cMoreover, what are you to Me,
\nO Tyre, Sidon and all the regions of Philistia?
\nAre you repaying something to me?
\nIf you are paying me back,
\n[I will] swiftly, speedily return your payback on your head.
\n3:5 \u201cSince you have taken My silver and My gold,
\nbrought My precious treasures to your temples [or palaces],
\n3:6 and sold the sons of Judah and sons of Jerusalem
\nto the sons of the Greeks,
\nin order to remove them from their own territory.
\n3:7 Behold, I am going to arouse them
\nfrom the place where you sold them,
\nand return your payback on your head.
\n3:8 \u201cAlso I will sell your sons and your daughters
\ninto the hand of the sons of Judah,
\nand they will sell them to the Sabeans,
\nto a nation far away,\u201d for the LORD has spoken.
\n3:9 Proclaim this among the nations:
\nPrepare for war!
\nCall out the warriors!
\nLet all these fighting men draw near [move forward] and go up [attack]!
\n3:10 Beat your [metal tip of the] plowshares into swords
\nand your pruning hooks [curved knives] into spears;
\nLet the weak say, \u2018I too am a warrior!\u2019
\n3:11 Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations,
\nand gather yourselves to that place.\u201d
\nBring down, O LORD, your warriors!
\n3:12 Let the nations [armies] be roused [called up]
\nand let them go up to the valley of Jehoshaphat,
\nfor there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
\n3:13 Send in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.
\nCome, trample [on the grapes], for the winepress is full!
\nThe vats overflow, for their evil is great.
\n3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
\nFor the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
\n3:15 The sun and moon are darkened
\nand the stars will gather in [diminish] their brightness.
\n3:16 The LORD roars from Zion;
\nand from Jerusalem he gives [forth] his voice
\nand the heavens and the earth trembles;
\nBut the LORD is a refuge for his people;
\nand a stronghold to the sons of Israel.
\n3:17 Then you will know that I am the LORD your God,
\ndwelling in Zion, My holy mountain.
\nThen Jerusalem will be holy,
\nand foreigners [armies] will no longer pass through it.
\n3:18 And in that day
\nthe mountains will drip with sweet wine,
\nand the hills will flow with milk,
\nand all the dry stream beds of Judah will flow with water.
\nA spring will go out from the house of the LORD
\nand will water the valley of acacias.
\n3:19 But Egypt will be desolate
\nand Edom will be a desolate wilderness,
\nbecause of the violence they did to the sons [people] of Judah,
\nin whose land they shed innocent blood.
\n3:20 But Judah will be inhabited forever
\nAnd Jerusalem from [one] generation and
\n[to the next] generation.
\n3:21 And I will avenge their blood which I have not avenged,
